Godfrey Valentine Brooke Hine

Godfrey Valentine Brooke Hine was killed in the First World War but his name is not commemorated on the Leigh War Memorial but on a window in Leigh Church.  He was the son of William Egerton Hine (artist), grandson of landscape artist, Henry George Hine and his mother was Edith Louise M Hine (also an artist), the daughter of Agnes Heath; her sisters were Florence and Maud and the Heaths lived at The Woods.    Godfrey was born at Reigate (bapt. 6 July 1890) and is shown as an art student in the 1911 census.  We have a pastel picture done by Edith Hine ca. 1887/88 of Leigh Church and cottages: see under the Row/Great Boydens.

More about Godfrey Hine can be found separately.  The claim below that the stained glass window in Leigh Church was made by William Nicholson and that Godfrey was a student of William Nicholson is incorrect; it was in fact done by Archibald K Nicholson who did in fact sign the work on the bottom right hand corner.
