Charity Win

The following comes from a newspaper article – unfortunately, it is a photocopy, which does not give the paper or a date.  However, the article refers to Reginald Buss, the late husband of Kate Buss: Reginald Buss died in 1937, so time after that date.  The article is about the Powder Mills football team – back in 1922/23.

Charity Win

Among the local football teams which took part in charity matches such as the Tonbridge Hospitals Competition referred to last week, was the Powder Mills team, photographed here after as Division II winners of the Tonbridge league cup for 1922-23.

The medallion is the one presented for the same occasion, and is one of a collection owned by Mrs K Buss of 34 Norfolk Road, Tonbridge whose late husband Reg Buss can be seen standing second from the right in the back row.

He was well known as a footballer, playing not only for the Powder Mills, but also for Southern Rovers, the local railway team.  He played cricket for Tonbridge YMCA and Tonbridge Trade and was a member of the popular Tonbridge Harriers, in which his brother, Fred Buss, of Hildenborough, won the marathon race from Maidstone to Tonbridge three years in succession.

Others in the picture are Noel Jempson, on the left wearing a dark suit.  He is still main host at The Plough Inn, Powder Mill Lane, Leigh.  His brother Jack is third from the right in the back row, standing half a head above everyone else.

Reg Andrews second from the right seated, is now an usher at Tonbridge police station since his retirement from the railways.  First on the left in the front row is Len King, mentioned last week.

The full team is: back row, left to right: Noel Jempson, Charles Bartlett, Bill Card, M. Evelyn, Goodwin, Alf Batchelor, Jack Jempson, Reg Buss, Charlies Hayter (of Leigh).

Seated, left to right: Len King, A. N. Other, Chummy Card, Reg Andrew, Reg Beach.
