FORGE Square and area/properties south of Church

Properties/land south of Church and east of Church Lane

By about 1778, the copyhold properties all along this part of the High Street and up past South View appear under the following five names:

Great Brooks = to the Churchyard towards West and North and to Highway toward South.  Great Brooks today but would have included attached buildings, e.g. Bell Cottage, and the cottages that used to be on the land now occupied by The Croft.

Little Brooks: area between Forge and Great Brooks  (now consists of Forge House and the smaller Forge Cottage)

Remys: abutting Churchyard against East with stable and shop of Leigh Green

Great Boydens = messuage and appurtenances to Churchyard to North, to Green in South.  Also given as “The Row – 3 cottages, 2 of which are semi-detached cottages.  (replaced with Forge Square and South View)

Little Boydens: to East of Great Boydens: copyhold property of Hall Place which was aliened to Leigh Vestry from the 1660s (which built vestry cottages for the poor on the land).  Passed back to Hall Place Estate in 1913.
