Rose Cottage (replaced with Charlotte Bungalows)

Rose Cottage with its garden stood on the site now occupied by Charlotte Bungalows.  According to Margaret Pyle (whose grandparents were Fred and Emily Fitzjohn) it was built in the 1760s.

It is listed in the 1870 Sales Particulars for the sale of Hall Place to Samuel Morley where it is described as an ornamental cottage dwelling, built of brick and tile, containing 6 rooms, with a large garden.  It is No. 11 on the plan and contained 0a 1r 10p.  It was let to Mr Jesse Sales, a yearly Michaelmas Tenant, at the low apportioned Rent of £10 per annum.

The 1872 Drainage Map and Report also states it was occupied by Mr Sales (owned by Mr Morley).

It continued to be occupied until the 1880s by Jesse Sales, a blacksmith.  His son, George Sales, was also a blacksmith.  He married Ann Barden and in 1851 was living next door to his father in the house then occupied by his father-in-law and now called the White House.

By a conveyance dated 31 August 1961 the land known as Rose Cottage was conveyed to Sevenoaks Rural District Council by Rt Hon Geoffrey Hope Baron Hollenden and SEVENOAKS RDC.   Rose Cottage was pulled down and Charlotte Bungalows were build on this land – it was said that they were named after the wife of Lord (Sidney) Bernstein who lived in the parish.  However, neither of his wives was named Charlotte.  But his step-daughter from his second marriage to Sandra Mary Malone was Charlotte-Lynn; and also his mother-in-law was Charlotte Lamont Malone.  She is buried in Leigh Churchyard (new churchyard – north) along with her daughter.  So it is more likely that it was Charlotte Malone, after whom the bungalows were named.

(Leigh Churchyard: Charlotte Lamont Malone of Lochee and Toronto 8 April 1888 – 20 September 1963 and daughter, Sandra Mary Bernstein, wife of Lord Bernstein 29 March 1923-23 November 1991)
