Well Close
WELL CLOSE
The land where Well Close was built was in 1921 owned by Penshurst Estate. It appears in the Penshurst Sales Particulars p. 19 as lot 16. It is described as Enclosures of Grass Land and Woodland and as situate at Lower Green, Leigh and extending to an area of about 11acres 1rod 6 perch. It was let to Mrs Charles Friend. Included in the lot was a stable for four and implement shed with loft over. It consisted of about 0.8 of an acre of ponds. From the area highlighted in the map, it indicates the kiln and the brick and tile works and extends up to the railway line.
The gradual development at Well Close took place on what were these old brick works at Leigh. At the entrance from Lower Green, the first half a dozen or so houses were built in the 1970s. However, the main development at Well Close took place around 1992. There are two newer houses – which sit back from the road – built later – ca 2000 – on the site of a former cottage near the railway track which was beyond repair.
On the left, just beyond Kiln Lane, a further two large detached houses were built on available land after the main 1992 development of Well Close. These two houses were built by R C Britten on the land where the electrical sub-station once stood – both were four bedroom, two bathroom properties, incorporating the blue diamonds in the brickwork which is evident in the walls surrounding all Place as in other brickwork around the village.
