Leigh Parish Registers 1592-1812

Leigh Parish Registers – 1592-1812 – the Colyer Fergusson Index for Leigh

The Historical Society has recently photographed the contents of the Colyer Fergusson book of Leigh Parish Registers from 1592-1812.  This book is held by Leigh Church.    The registers were copied and indexed by Thomas Colyer Fergusson of Ightham Mote in 1936.

Thomas Colyer Fergusson (1865-1951) was a member of the Kent Archaeological Society, as well as other Societies, both antiquarian and genealogical.   In the last 40 years of his life he made and indexed copies in triplicate of the registers of nearly sixty parishes of the Diocese of Rochester, presenting one copy to the incumbent, one to the Society of Genealogists and retaining a copy for himself.  More details about Thomas Colyer Fergusson can be found at the Kent Archaelogical Society website as well as on-line generally.

The Leigh Historical Society has now photographed the whole 250 page book, which – as well as baptisms, marriages and burials – also has notes on the Church bounds, endowments and terrier of the parish: it has a page of unfinished entries, of strangers and pilgrims, a list of clergy, and an alphabetical index.

If you would like the Society to look up an entry for you, please
