A Perambulation of Kent by William Lambarde

Written in 1570. First published 1576. This volume republished in 1826. Printed by W. Burrill, Chatham

Partial index with no mention of Leigh: but there is a chapter on Tunbridge pp 380-386, one map
(1829) and a number of engravings of stately homes.

Mansions, Men and Tunbridge Ware by Ethel Younghusband

Published 1949 by Windsor Press.

Index - no references to Leigh directly. Largely concerned with Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Penshurst, Bayham Abbey, Hever, Eridge etc. Large bibliography, 21 illustrations, mainly of Tunbridge Ware.

Sevenoaks Essays by Gordon Ward

Published 1931 by Metcalfe & Cooper.

Index with six references to Leigh. Highly respected historian from Sevenoaks. Good cross references.

Index: no mentions of Leigh but many for Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Penshurst etc. 22

Index but no mention of Leigh. Generally thought as the most readable look at the town. 16

FOUR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS DONATED TO LEIGH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

1. Leigh Village 240mm wide x 180mm high

A series of 24 views of Leigh between the Wars, seemingly professionally taken and mounted.

2. The First Lord Hollenden's four-in-band carriages and horses 230mm x 180mm

12 photos of Lord Hollenden driving his carriages and of individual horses.

3. Hall Place War-time Activities 320mm x 245mm

Approx. 90 photos of Leigh 1941-45 (plus approx. 50 of Devon). Of particular interest are farming during the War, the family's temporary living quarters in Little Hall Place (outbuildings) and shooting parties.

4. Hall Place- mainly exteriors 320mm x 230mm

Album only 1/3 filled. Approx. 40 photos of Hall Place, the deer in the deer park and other animals (including 2 flamingos) and Prices Wood. (Also photos of Dartmouth area).

 

NOTES:

  1. Some of the photos in album 3 have been removed.
  2. Some of the photos in album 3 & 4 have handwritten descriptions underneath - possibly by Lady (Diana) Hollenden.
  3. Also donated is a copy of The Field from 21 March 1957 with a photo (together with the original professional photo) and article about Lord Hollenden and his role as President of the Salmon & Trout Association.
