Great Barnetts Oast

Whilst of similar overall size to Ramhurst, the oast at Great Barnetts Farm (now known as Moat Farm House) has its roundels set off one of the gable-ends of the stowage barn. The two roundels, again some 20 ft. in external diameter, are built in Flemish bond but one has square dentelling and the other angled.

A building is shown on this exact location on the 1841 map and on the 1870 OS map an oast is clearly marked but with only one roundel. It is thought that this was built in 1820-30 and the second roundel added in the 1870s.

This oast was converted to a domestic residence in Leigh (c. 1948) and was subsequently extended at the rear in 1975. Each roundel has been equipped with a symmetrical arrangement of wide span windows at both levels, with stucco facing to the brickwork between the two sets of windows. The cowls were removed from this oast some years ago (possibly when it was converted as they exist in 1920's photographs) and the tops of the conical roofs have been weather-sealed. Their absence gives a rather squat appearance to the kilns.

Internally, the conversion offers fairly conventional accommodation with the two roundels offering living-rooms downstairs and bedrooms above. The three cross beams are detectable in the corridor located in the upper level of the barn.
