Cinder Hill Oast
![]() |
The single-roundel oast-house at Cinder Hill is by far the smallest in the parish, if not in Kent. The roundel is only 12ft. in external diameter and the barn, whilst of conventional width, is only half the normal length at 21ft. Its size gives a rather sweet, dolls-house appearance in the context of the neighbouring house and barn. The height of the roundel (14ft.) is similar to Ramshurst and Moat House Farm. The brickwork is a variant of Flemish Garden Wall bond (only two stretchers and a header) and square dentelling has been used. It appears as a blob on the 1841 map but is clearly shown with its single roundel on the 1870 OS.map.
Converted in 1990, it is used mainly for holiday accommodation, offering two bedrooms at the
first floor. Only one cross-beam is used in accordance with its reduced length. The hop-press has
been preserved but has not been re-assembled and is stored away.
