Historical Society

The Leigh and District Historical Society was founded with two main aims. The first is to provide an annual programme of meetings with presentations on historical subjects connected to Leigh, together with presentations on subjects of both county and national interest. Full details of the current programme can be found on the Leigh Village website.

The second objective of the Society is to create an archive of local historical material and to make that material available both to local residents and historians in general. This website is designed to make available some of the vast amount of material available from the Society. Further information can be obtained from the Secretary or by e-mailing the Society.

Local Heritage Initiative Grant

The Society has ben awarded a grant to help with its work on the Leigh Powder Mills. The Heritage Lottery Fund has offered £16,044, supplemented by a further £3,750 from the Nationwide Building Society. The grant will cover writing an archeological/historical report on the site, an exhibition and various education initiatives and ending up with a management plan for the future of the site. Further details of the work will appear on this web site in due course.
